Prime & Zoom lenses

Prime & Zoom Lens

Prime-vs.-Zoom-Lenses

Prime lens have fixed focal length, as opposed to zoom lens which is variable.

The main advantages of a prime lens are:

  • Sharper (manufacturer can design lens specifically arround one focal length to make it the sharpest image possible.)
  • Faster Aperture (even low cost lens can have apetures down to F1.4)
  • Lower Cost
  • More Portable (light weight lens, however you may need to carry more than one!)

and the Advantages of Zoom lens are:

  • Versatility (range of shots can be WS to ECU)
  • Ease of Use (no need to keep changing lens for each shot type)
  • Specialty Shots (Zoom in/out)
